The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) Course Program is a series of online courses that take an in-depth look at the rules, regulations, and changes made in the 2023 NESC Edition and are available exclusively through the IEEE Xplore Digital Library and the IEEE Learning Network. Taught by industry leaders who helped write the Code, these courses provide essential training for safeguarding of utility workers and the public during the installation, operation, and maintenance of electric supply, communication lines and associated equipment.

Courses Included in the Program:


  • Introduction to the National Electrical Safety Code
    • Providing an introduction to the 2023 National Electrical Safety Code, this course focuses on the objectives, purpose, and scope of the NESC. It also discusses the committee structure, brief history of the organization, and the procedures and review cycles of the NESC. 
  • Rule Changes 
    • Addressing major rule changes to NESC 2023, this course pays special attention to the changes you'll find in Sections 1, 2, 3, and 9, as well as Part 1—Substations, Part 2—Aerial Facilities, Part 3—Underground Lines, and Part 4—Work Rules. 
  • Introduction to Grounding 
    • The requirements for ground conductors, equipment, and other facilities are found in various parts of the NESC, and these methods will be discussed in detail in this course as they relate to overhead, underground, and substations. 
  • Work Rules for the Operation of Electric Supply and Communications Lines and Equipment 
    • This course focuses on Part 3, which contains rules for the installation and maintenance of underground electric supply and communication lines. In it, you'll learn about the purpose, scope, and application of the rules, as well as Sections 31 through 39. 
  • Rules for Installation and Maintenance of Electric Supply Stations 
    • This course looks at Section 10 of the NESC, which covers the purpose, scope, and application of the rules in relation to electric supply stations. It also provides a review of Sections 11 through 19 regarding equipment.
  • Safety Rules of the Installation and Maintenance of Underground Electric Supply 
    • In this course, we'll discuss the history of Part 4, as well as the relationships between the NESC and OSHA standards. You'll learn about rules for employees and employers, along with additional rules for communication and supply employees.
  • Safety Rules for Installation and Maintenance of Overhead Electric Supply 
    • Learn about the rules for the installation and maintenance of overhead electric supply and communication lines. This course focuses on Sections 21 through 27, including basic inspection and grounding requirements, the mechanical and electrical requirements for insulators, as well as requirements for clearance and overhead lines.
